Does that description fit?
Do you think with what you do?
- I think other people consider my music to be more country than I do.
- Yeah.
- I think maybe the way that I sing or my accent, or even though I'm from South Dakota, it seems like that's the connotation that goes with it.
Some of my songs are countryish, but... - In what way?
Like in the lyrics, in the vocals, in the guitar?
Like... - Yeah, there's definitely some train beats (laughs) - Yeah, okay.
- in a couple of songs.
And just like kind of sad and croony, depressing sort of music, yeah.
- Got it.
(Haley laughs) When you're writing a song here at home, do you usually start on guitar, on piano or either/or?
- I usually start on keytar and then... (laughs) - No you don't.
That's a total lie.
(laughs) (Haley laughs) - I don't really have an either/or, it's just whatever I feel like playing.
But I find that I start out most of my songs on the piano.
- All right, and then do they sometimes like jump?
Do they move to guitar?
Okay.
- Yeah.
Some of the songs on my newest record that are pretty fast and rocky, and they started out as just like really slow piano and just like giving myself enough time to make up the lyrics and think about what I'm gonna... And so, it just depends on the song.
- And when did you start making music with a mind of doing that vocationally?
- I don't know.
I feel like it's probably hard to make that decision before you're actually doing it.
I never got into it because I thought I could make a living.
It was just something that I like to do.
But the first time that I got paid to do a show was at a bookstore in Rapid City, and I just like, I couldn't believe it.
I thought it was the coolest thing ever.
And I have to remember that sometimes.
When I'm doing that and I'm stressed out about money or whatever, it's like, well, you get to do what you like and it's cool.

(audience applauds) (audience applauds) (gentle guitar music) (bright guitar music) - [Dessa] So is there a music scene in South Dakota where you grew up?
- There was actually.
I mean, there's a lot of folk music based in South Dakota, but the music that I was exposed to most was like the punk and metal and the indie bands that were coming through, and that was great because I don't think I would have seen any shows besides like the Steve Miller Band if I didn't go and participate in these get-togethers as my mom called it.
- Get-together?
(Haley laughs) Does get-together mean like basement show or were they- - There were basement shows, there was a warehouse, there's shows at the 4-H Club or like in the basement of the old folks home or whatever, and we were always trying to figure out where we could hold the next show.
- And then from South Dakota, you went to college at the University of Minnesota Duluth Campus.
- Yes.
- Right?
Did you have aspirations of becoming a musician or...?
- No, I actually was there to study English Lit and I was getting a minor in Women's Studies.
I found that I spent time that I should have been doing my homework for those classes sneaking down to the piano rooms in the Music Department, and I was always too intimidated to actually enroll in any music classes at the college.
- Why intimidated?
Like scared of performing in front of people or...?
- One, just hearing people play scales and then do classical music, and everyone can read and everyone's very like educated in that regard.
I was super intimidated by that 'cause I can't.
(laughs) Did you play piano when you were a kid?
Like had you taken lessons or...?
- Yeah, I did.
I took lessons kind of off and on for the better part of my childhood, but I honestly never considered studying it, because to me it was too much of a fun thing to do on the side in my spare time.

Like that was how you could define success?
Like did you hope to be signed by a major label when you were starting out?
- I actually, I didn't, and I was going to sign to a major label at two different times and I said no.
And- (laughs) - Why did you say no?
- Because they wanted me to sound like a certain part of one of my songs that I had.
They said, "You know that part on 'Car Wreck'?
That song, that sort of vibe that you have, we want that."
And I was like, "Well, you know what?

- I look back and I think, wow, you had some balls back then to do that because a lot of people were like, "How can you just turn down this label and all this money and this 15-year contract including the greatest hits?"

- I grew up listening to the oldies station.
I love what everybody loves, the Beatles and the Rolling Stones and Joni Mitchell and Johnny Cash and Loretta Lynn and I was influenced greatly by that and also a lot of grunge and rock music in the '90s and stuff.
So- - What kind of grunge stuff?
- Oh, Nirvana of course.

So there's definitely a lot of authors that I love.

(audience applauds) (audience applauds) - So you're originally from Tennessee, or at least you spent a good share of your childhood there.
- Right.
- Well, what were some of the like biggest differences living in the South versus living up here in Minnesota?
- Well, Minnesotans are indoors for most of the year, whereas down South it's warmer so we're outside more often than not, starting the day, ending the day, and spending whatever you can of the day on the porch.
So this literally is my favorite place.
Like I would rather not be out and about at a club or a bar or coffee shop.
I just kind of enjoy the slow pace.
- But I presume in the South, like everybody's on their front porches.
- Yeah, that is the difference.
I am the only one- - Well, here you're like neighborhood watch.
(laughs) - There's some folks next door.
I love it.
They'll be bundled up playing chess and drinking coffee, so we give the head nod.
Other than that, mostly everyone stays inside.
But I at least get to see folks when they're coming and going.
And I just love picking, writing a song out here is so different than like plugging in anything.
- When you come out here to start writing a song, like do you know what direction you're headed in, or do you just kind of explore it as the sounds happen?
- One of the things about writing on the porch is that there's no, it's the easiest place to be, so therefore, in writing songs, there doesn't need to be any like specific direction.
It's just play, just sing, just write with no boundaries.
We're gonna blow off the porch here.

- [Dessa] So you started playing music in the church.
Right?
- [Chastity] Yeah.
Like is the music that you now play in clubs primarily, right?
- Yeah.
- That's the venue where you perform most often.
Is there still a spiritual aspect to that for you or is this a totally different musical experience?
- No, I mean, I grew up in like a full gospel church, where like music takes over, you get down with a get down.
You have this sense of literally singing out of yourself, so it's a very physical, fully mode of singing.
And so, it wasn't even a matter of like having to translate it, it just seems to be the basis of how I create, which is to feel it and go from there.
- Wow, okay, so is it coming from like a less intellectualized place and a more like feeling place?
My criteria is that the story has to be true, all the elements have to support each other.
When I know that that is the case, then I allow myself to feel it.
There's times where I really feel a song, but I can't figure out how that story comes about, and I won't do it until the story is complete.
- When it does come, I mean, how do you, like is there a scramble to capture it so you don't forget it or you like - Oh, yeah.
- writing in your car, like sing into your iPhone, what do you do?
- I sing it over and over again.
I have never been the type to write songs down.
I just sing again and again and again, and then somehow it just gets locked in.

(audience applauds) (audience applauds) - Does it feel like you have to know your audience and you have to let them know you better than if you were playing a different kind of music?
- I think so.
In some sort of way, my music requires that because it's storytelling, because it's folk music.
It wouldn't require that, I think, if I were indie rocker or had the type of music to where I could be removed from an audience.
Because I'm telling stories, I'm asking them to connect with me and I can't just assume that I deserve that.
I can't assume that because I love this so much and am passionate that that would somehow like earn me the right for their time.
Playing live in front of an audience, it's the most exhilarating, but at the same time, it took me so long to figure out the dynamic.
- The dynamic between you and the crowd, - Yeah.
- the dynamic between you and the guitar, between you and your players?
- Between it all, but most specifically, I'm the leader of this band, and to figure out what is a respectful way to lock in with an audience, at the same time, be absolutely authentic and in the zone to be able to lock in with these guys.
I've been playing out for a good eight or nine years, and it's only been in the last two years that I feel like I finally understand, and I stopped trying to fight how anxious I get, especially before a show.
- Are you prone to stage fright?
- It's not so much stage fright, as it is.
I'm just an anxious person in general, and so- (laughs) - Really?
You seem so chill.
- You have no idea!
It's like... (laughs) (Dessa laughs) But even like right before walking onstage, I get like very, very nervous and it kinda like runs through my veins.
The couple times that it has not happened, I blew it.
I just like, was just cut off.
At some point, you work so hard to like be so specific with your craft, and the way you put on a show, but those subtle nuances that might be mistakes are also why we love performing.
